WHAT IS A PRINT?
Original Print. A print made directly from a master image on metal, stone, wood etc. which is executed, printed or supervised and signed by the artist.
Relief Print. An image printed from the raised surface of a block from which the white areas of the design have been cut away.
Etching. An intaglio process in which the plate is marked by exposing it to the corrosive action of acid.
Edition Number. The total number of prints produced. The edition number usually appears adjacent to the artist's signature. 6/10 denoted the 6th print in a total edition of 10 prints. A/P denotes Artists Proof and T/P Trial Proof.
Lithograph. The basic principle of lithography is the antipathy of oil and water. The design is drawn on limestone, zinc or aluminium plates with crayon or greasy ink.
Collograph. A collage of materials glued together on a base and printed as a combined relief and intaglio plate.
Intaglio. A term to describe printing from a plate which bears ink in grooves or pitted marks.
Woodcut. A relief print gouged out of the long grain of a plank of wood.
Screenprint. A stencil is adhered to a taut fabric screen which is place over paper. Ink is then forced through the mesh of the screen with a rubber blade which transfers the image, in a uniform tone, onto paper.
